Need some help on Elm

I love this thread. There's a lot of good advice here, especially for a rookie like myself. Can't wait to see what happens. It's looking great, imho!

A little over a month since the last photos. Here are some new ones. I am sure that I have cut off some sprouts that others would have kept and have kept some that should have been cut. Any opinions?

Yes the wiring is not nice and sticking out but everytime I water I am reminded to check it.

It's time to just let it grow the rest of the season. Prune back in fall.

No more trimming at all? Won't some of the branches grow too long and thick?

They'll get long, but you will cut them way back again in the fall and then again next year. The bases of the branches will fatten, but the sub branches that result will be just right.

I'd like to see the tree planted quite a bit deeper in the pot. Many of those visible roots are much too fat and very unattractive. If you plant it so the tops of the roots show above ground, that will make the nice trunk itself take over as the focal point of the tree.

Sure, but the tree needs some strength. A lot of work has been done. What ever is cut in fall will be cut back to a very small stub of a branch anyway. This is to build taper in the branch. Don't worry too much as this is done yearly to all bonsai. Get used to it. It does become a grind.

Here is the tree after a month of growing since last photos. Should I still just let it grow or should I do some hedge pruning? As you can see it just likes to grow.

I'd let it grow.
Start labeling stuff for fall pruning.
And go back every week till then to make sure you still like it.

I do.

You could Probly whack flush about half in fall, and stub the other half.
Maybe leave a low one full.

Let it grow. Its doing great!

You can slow it down by pushing down all that vertical growth. Just use some wire across the growth and affix it to the rim of the pot or drill some holes.

Seems this tree wants to grow like it was.

I'll tell ya, you put taper in them old gangly trunks, and throw the same type of crown, maybe a little neater, on top, and this is a stunner.

It does like to grow. Just itchin to cut something.

If you cut it your not going to have anything big enough to wire for the fall. You want them as large as a matchstick and it looks like your getting there. 60 days is all that's left, just a little more patience and then it will be ready for a cut job and some wire to establish some form.

Baby steps......

Thanks for all of your help. I appreciate it.

I'm just amazed by the amount of growth put out by these Elms. Between seeing yours and ColinFrasers, I'm feeling like I need to get out and buy one!

These elms grow like weeds. Pull a seedling out of the ground, take it home and plant it, looks like it is dead, two weeks later pops new buds. Yes some die but I would say 75% make it even in the heat we are having. That is just bare root collecting. I have about 4 larger ones and this is the nicest. All of them I would say can grow about 1 - 2" per week in the good growing weather. Makes it fun if you see some changes fairly quickly. It keeps you interested.

J.

You ever consider pulling that one L root down?
That's the only one doesn't work for me.

I think you can zip tie it in....

I am assuming that you are talking about the one on the right in the last photo. I have looked at it and it is very stiff so I can just force it down. I am going to try to do something when I repot the tree but since it is growing so well I hate to mess with that any sooner than I have to. I have thought about just removing it but my first impression is that it might leave an empty space. So.................

the one on the right in the last photo. I have looked at it and it is very stiff

Yes.
I wouldn't know it was So stiff from looking at it! Good eyes! Lol

It looks like cutting it would be ugly. Its better on, than gone, even as is.

When you repot, I think you can tease it out and get her in.
Consider a pot wide enough to safely hold a big ass rock.

Sometimes you can lay a smooth rock on em to smash em in.
A big ass rock, but it works!
