Need help with Azalea, Please!

Not sure about this. Probably better to add some chelating agent to the distilled water.

At some point the excess minerals in the media will be locked up and things should get better.

Likely not a good idea to bring in the tree if you have a/c. That would cause a whole slew of issues…light. humidity, acclimation both taking the tree both in and out later... Usually azaleas respond in a two to four week window when conditions change to the positive…

Is it possible to move the tree to more shade and water down the ground underneath, mist and wrap a wet towel around the pot to keep the media cooler… and make sure the foliage dries before sun down… or is this something you have done already?.

Cheers

Do you happen to have any thoughts about the current condition of the tree and what I should do to try now?

Do you mean that even the backbudding that's happening now is browing up an falling off?

If it is backbudding, the tree is trying to save itself.
Better not interfere with that.

Care for plants is basically 90% preventative. If severe damage occurred, there is not much we can't do.
All the things we can do with humans/animals in say a medical trauma setting, none like those methods analogous to plants even exist.
You can only observe if the problem you had on the old leaves does not happen to the new ones.

That some of the other old leaves are still browning up and falling off could still be a result of the damage it incurred in the past.
Likely, the tree is compartementalizing those dead and dying parts in an effort to save the parts that have backbudding.

Yikes! Sorry to see this.

Wondering…. Do you have this tree under a shade cloth, or in bright shade all day? If not please do so asap.

Dropping leaves is a sign of stress. likely the former leaves were too far gone and gave up the ghost and the tree responded to the new water supply and pushed buds, as azaleas are known to do. Yet trees in this state can’t handle The sun well.

Even a healthy tree, a radically cut back azlaea , with green left on the tips of all foliage doesn’t like more then a bit of early morning sun

This means the tree needs only a bare minimum of watering until the new growth gets strong enough to increase transpiration, So keep a light hand on the wand. Misting yes, frequent watering no. Try to keep the soil moist, not wet.

This is a time root rot frequently occurs. Water accordingly.

Take off any obviously dead leaves and buds. Ensure the surface of the media is totally clean of any dead leaves and branchlets etc where fungus will form.

Good Luck!
cheers
