Most important components for bonsai?

Just for giggles and to stir the pot the Lake Merritt bonsai display has misters both overhead and root aimed ones. The overheads are twice a day and root more often if I recall correctly. Both can be over ridden if there is rain. I don’t have specs just a video tour where it was mentioned.

Yes, they do. And Kathy Shaner, who is the curator of the collection, does not like them.

I always wonder why people have different opinions regarding turface. Some say it retains too much water while others say it retains less water than akadama does. Some say it does develop good roots while others say it develops fines roots very well. I wonder how much of the different experiences are due to climate and how much is due to personal care routines. Species also make a difference I am sure.

Also tree species;).

with that amount of misting, you can easily run into fungal problems as the leaves are continuously staying wet for large periods, so be mindful. you can raise the local humidity levels around the tree by top dressing the soil with sphagnum moss and keeping it wet/moist.

Hear, Hear🤨!

Her being curator why does she allow this😕?
She’s not there all the time. I guess the Board of Directors thought it was a good idea.

The misters are these elaborate copper or brass tubes that are positioned all around the trees. Makes the trees look like they’re in some weird cage!

Interesting. The video I saw the lady giving the guy the special early tour before the opened she was talking about how much better they were compared to the old ones and how they were donated by someone. Right around the time they talk about the guy that builds the tables so that attachment points are hidden using Japanese techniques. Maybe she’s just being polite and not saying something bad about her garden that she can’t control. Seems to me it would be easy enough to override the auto system and hand water every time though. I’d love to hear her critique.

If it’s the same video I saw, that’s not Kathy Shaner. It’s one of the volunteers.

I’ve been to the garden, and the misters are a distraction.
