Moss gardening

Oh yeah, a long way from and very different than coastal B.C.! Ponderosa pine and rmj dominant species in some places. Some of the interior of B.C. is so hot and dry its nothing but sagebrush (and I would love to go collecting there) I think it may even be classified as desert or very close to.

I had no idea about that. Not terribly intuitive lol

And you don't do anything special to keep the lichen alive? Anything special to get it going after collecting?

I keep a good chunk of the material its growing on intact then neglect it as much as possible.:). It gets some incidental watering along with trees sometimes depending where it sits.
I've read yoghurt and I think buttermilk is good for feeding, haven't tried yet.
I've heard they are quite sensitive to pollutants maybe that includes chlorine in treated water.
I only have kept the one stone planting and some patches in pots but I enjoy lichens and mosses I hope to grow more.
Ever looked at lichens under a microscope? Crazy, mosses too.

What a beautiful moss garden--the photos are stunning. I no longer keep an aquarium, but one of the things I always wanted to do was overgrow a tank with java moss. I may have to begin composing a 'dry' moss garden...

Hardly moss gardening but I have enjoyed this little planting of mosses and lichens quite a bit. One of my favorites is the lichen with the red tips popularly known as British soldiers [Cladonia cristatella].

me too - but i have a hard time keeping them alive once i move them

Its neat when you see these places or microclimatic areas, Florida is full of them. There is one area maybe half mile wide by maybe a mile long, could be slightly smaller, area out of Tampa Fl. between Thonotosassa and Temple Terrace that all the tree trunks and the ground is covered in green mosses. Some are long while others are short strand mosses with lichens in the mix as well as Fungi like mushrooms. They are beautiful areas that some describe as creepy. Its easy to look at them in your minds eye as an almost extraterrestrial encroachment overpowering the local environment. There are others that are covered in whats known asd Florida deer lichens and Florida Reindeer lichens. They look like coral from the sea, the deer lichens being a thinner structure while the Florida Reindeer lichens are thicker structures. They are hard and crunchy with multi branches or twig/spikes.

I like the British Soldier Serg. You had a touch of that in your accent at the Nationals didn't you? It was among the best accents, hands down. Do you collect it our buy it?

Thanks Brian! Yes you are correct sir! I did have a tiny bit of it in there. No I wished it grew around my area. I do have lichens all over but not soldiers. I bought them through EBay and came originally from PA.

In my experience they are tough to transplant as watchndsky mentioned so I have a few pots with them and the one I showed is one where they survived and doing well. Like many other lichens, they will not do well in areas with air pollution.

Thanks for the inspiration.

After reading and replying, I have become intrigued by the thought of moss gardening. I walked around the local woods today and found no less that 12 different varieties growing near my home. Everything from the stuff that looks like a tiny green carpet, to varieties that are well over 6" thick and look like tiny palm fronds. Planning an getting a garden going and I will post once complete.

Can moss be grown indoors?
Joedes

The kind of moss you would want to use on your trees cannot. It suffers the same fate temperate trees suffer when this is tried.

Thought I'd post my first attempts at making a moss garden.
Hope you like.
