May I present to you: The Bonsainut Thread to PDF program

Hey everyone,

Over the past few days, evertime I've found time, I've worked on a solution for a problem I had laying arround in my head.
Since here on bnut theres no option to print a thread directly, to store it as a file on your pc, to come back later and view it.

I decided to create a Bonsainut Thread to PDF program, it lets you supply the Thread (s) you want to download and it fetches them, displays them inside a pdf (and html file) for you to view.
Bonus point, also full resolution images get saved to a images folder, so you also have these.
Currently its only tested a few times, therefore on some specific thread elements like tables, it isnt styled yet.
However this will come with future implementations, as I work with it myself, to download any threads I want to keep save.

Hope this helps some of you (I know its a odly specific problem), but I like it so far.
especially for those long Progression Threads, where so much good info is put it by creators and also watchers / interactors.

If anybody is interested in a list of threads I personally found great in terms of knowledge, Im free to share them in this Thread also.

I included the first few pages of a example pdf file of this thread by @ABCarve for you (for convenience reasons I wont of course supply you with all images of the Thread.)
All right to text, images and other content of course belongs to the creators and writers inside the threads, this is just a tool to safe them!

Nice, good job!
I don't know how to work with python a whole lot so I have no idea on how to do this.
Do you think it's possible in the future to filter out certain entries? Like, the original poster only?

Of course this would be possible.
Also im thinking about compiling everything to a installer (an application for desktop), so "normal / not-tech" users can use it. Of course for this I would first need to write a ui. This takes time, which at the moment is a rarety for me. But I will keep everyone updated on this here! Thanks for the interest :)
 
Basically the good thing with the way I set it up, you can technically filter out any posts you don't want... The room for customization is practically endless...
 
A windows or whateverappleuses (linux?) installer would be awesome. Thanks for doing all this work!
 
Why not subscribe to the thread, and then come back to it here? Also, when I hit CTRL/Command+P, I'm presented with the option to save as pdf. That's built-in w/o having to install anything else. Not even a plugin.

What am I missing?

Not that I doubt our fearless leader's commitment to maintaining the site, but Bnut won't be around forever... You never know what can happen. Sites I used to visit regularly just a few years ago are gone now, not every an archival copy left anywhere. Sometimes the owner got bored and quit, sometimes they got taken down by new owners, sometimes they just went offline without explanation.

Data preservation is never a bad idea.

That option limits to the single page youre on.

That's exactly the problem I had also, On the 15-20 page threads I didn't want to save every page on its own, the having to merge it back together... Also it has taken me only maybe 3-4 hours to write the program, which I think is worth the output :)

Yes Apple / macos is basically Unix, I'm working on building a all in one installer... Will take some time. But before I do that I need to fix some issues I found out about yesterday! And thanks for the compliment, I was just writing it for myself and thought why not maybe share it to the community, maybe someone is searching for something like it.

Probably not a feature many people need or would have a use for, but your (@Bonsai Nut) recent post about "not worrying about the site disappearing" got me thinking.

It would be cool if we could export a thread to, say, a bare bones html, PDF, or hell, even a word doc. Maybe just our own threads, maybe just our own threads with and our own posts.

You know, just in case the worst did actually happen - we'd be able to save our progressions for posterity.

I suppose I could have done this too, considering I'm a software developer, and have written programs in the past to scrape websites.

If you want you can work as a contributor with me on the project, only if youve got time... Btw, whats your branch your working in?

For me, im basically doing anything from robotics, object detection / cnn's and so on, web development (building a cms and frontend for a onlineshop im starting) to analytics.
Mostyl with python, nodejs (javscript), c++ and so on... At the moment Im doing lots of sql though...

I work on a couple legacy .Net applications, some more modern .Net REST APIs, and an Angular web front end. Full stack for everything.

I've done a decent amount of java, c++, node and python stuff - but mainly just building/customizing home automation stuff (OpenHAB, Arduino, RaspberryPI, etc.).
