Massive American Beech

Magnesium deficiency? Leaf veins are much darker green that lighter ones, and especially on older leaves. Suggests that is a motile nutrient deficiency: hence my Mg suggestion...

No it has a balanced diet, for some reason american beech will do this when first collected and are a bit weak. I've had a few do this. The following year as strength is regained it goes back to normal.

2nd flush pushing now, first growth got sligtly burned with one random 90 degree day

I have a couple trees wich i repotted with the same isue,
i think its because there are to few roots to provide all the leaves with enough water so the edges drie out to reduce the leave mass a bit

This is true, also though Beech leaves take time to harden off and are much more prove to leaf damage from environmental extremes

Did all of your beech make it through the summer? I have several I could collect and love the smooth light bark

So I've had the itch to collect as I havn't done much this year other then a large Ume. Normal I try and get 4-5 good tree's a year. I sold 5 tree's this year so I wanted to put a few back in my collection. I meant to take more pictures of the process of digging this tree out but I completely forgot. This was the one of the hardest dig's I've done and I almost gave up as this tree it huge despite it's age. it's about 4 feet tall and weights ALOT. Anyway it's a lot term project, with a lot of carving(going to hollow it out) and branch development.

I've killed a few of those. My experience says to give it shade. I've spied a few to collect in the future.

Giga,

I recently read this book called "the hidden lives of trees" I think you would enjoy it. easy reader, mostly based on an about beech trees. a very unique perspective, but also some useful information for bonsai, at least I thought so. Couple unique factoids in there. for instance, those buds were made last year while the tree was still in the shade of the forest, so they were not accustomed to bright light, so they were probably just sun burned. Also, fagus grandifolia got its name as american beech, because its found here, but its found in other places too, hence the latin name, big leaf beech. has to do with the tree's migratory tendencies between ice ages. but if anything, id say its a lack of potassium, see section on beech in the book, bonsai from native trees, by werner m busch, another useful and good read.

cool!

Good trunk but a LONG wait to get realistic taper if you're going to grow out a branch as a new leader. Are you going top killed by lightning as regards the carving to speed this up?

my carving arm will be stong with this one! and yes it's like a very long term project, but arn't they all!

Giga, any detailed advice you could share with collecting these? Your original post was early April, was that the day you collected? How much rootball did you dig, bareroot?

Just make sure you collect before they leaf out, you usally have more time as they're last to leaf out. I get a fair about of roots and I loosly bareroot, never wash with water
