I decided to do add a new maple to my collection this spring. Instead of going to the usual places I decided to roll the dice and order a “bonfire” Japanese maple from Maples N More nursery in Burnsville NC. You all know that I like supporting small businesses and I hadn’t heard anyone mention them on here so I figured why not give them a try, give them some business and do a unboxing review on them… so here we go!

I ordered a Bonfire JM, the price was fair at $34.99. Shipping was priced ok at $23 for standard 7-10 day shipping. Being as I am in NC as well I didn’t have an issue with the shipping speed…but…it may be a little to slow for some folks on the west coast during the summer months, it was shipped via UPS. Upon delivery the first thing I noticed picking up the package was it felt very secure and I didn’t hear any soil tumbling around in the box…Always a good sign. There was also a North Carolina Department of Agriculture certification/license certificate on the box.

A nice little care sheet was included along with the packing slip. So far everything has been done very professionally and packaging is on point.

Upon opening I was very happy to see a bright and colorful, healthy little maple smiling back at me. It was bagged and secured in the box very nicely.

I appreciate the attention to detail, like the paper wadding in the pot to keep the soil from shifting.

Tree itself is beautiful. It is healthy, it is shaped well and has nice tight internodes with small leaves.

It also has a nice, clean graft.

All in all I am very happy with my new maple and am very happy with the whole experience. Being that this is a completely unsolicited review and they have no idea I am doing a review on their product, Maples N More will definitely be getting more of my business in the future, they are have great, quality trees at a great price. I feel confident in recommending them to my fellow nuts.

Maples n More is a great nursery that is a little hard to find - nestled in a valley off a valley in the mtns about halfway between Asheville and Blowing Rock. I have six of their trees. Horace and Lisa (the owners) are great people. If you want a great deal on tons of material, take advantage of their grafted trees in 4" tubes at $20 each. The 4" trees are small, but if you are looking to purchase a lot of starter material you can't go wrong. I was just talking with Horace earlier this week - I'm going to be bringing him a tree. I was planning on writing an entire nursery visit review when I go up there in late April/early May.

nice review...only problem I see is that bonfire is known for its brilliant red spring foliage...not orange. In my garden it rivals deshojo for spring foliage.

After a little more Googling it does appear that there is some variation...who knows:)
We will see how it does, hopefully once it gets settled in for a year it will really show its true colors. It took a year for my Mr. Maple deshojos to start showing a bright red. How is the growth rate on these bonfires?

I sent them a link to this thread and let them know I did a review on their tree, they invited me to come take a tour of their nursery as well. I’m looking forward to meeting Horace and Lisa. Good to know about the $20 trees…. That’s dangerous. 😂
And a Kershaw Leek.

I never leave home without it. I’m on my second one in 10 years.
The only question is... is @19Mateo83 left-handed?
Negatory there ghost writer 🤚

IME fall colors will vary from year to year but spring colors seem to be consistent in individual trees...but that is just my observations I don't know if that is really true or not. Either way it has attractive spring color.

I agree, It is is a pretty maple either way. Thanks for the info John.

There are actually at least 2 cultivars floating around the US by the name of ‘bonfire’ one is more of a red pink like Deshojo or Chishio. This is the one that is sold by Mr. Maple.

the one that @19Mateo83 has is a different cultivar from that ‘bonfire’.

@19Mateo83 I’m glad you found them and took a chance on buying, I have been buying from them for many years. I can not say enough good things about them, super nice people and I love to support them when I can. Plus they know I’m a sucker for maples so the help the addiction.

19Mateo83,

Thank you for the review and the shout out. We try to package every plant as if we were shipping it to a family member. Every customer deserves to get the best. I can't say that UPS has that same mentality as us.

Piedmont Bonsai,

The color can be a tad washed out or less vivid from it being grown under 55% greenhouse poly. We grow all of our 1g size maples under poly and that can affect the colors.

Jcmmaple,

Thank you for the business. What is your name and have you visited the nursery?
