I picked up an old maple tree that had been growing in the window of a shop downtown for many years. I would guess that It has not been potted for at least 20 years in this pot. For the short time I had it last summer and fall it did well and grew a lot of new branches. This spring it came along well also but then the leaves started to show this wrinkled look for some reason. The leaves aren't dying, just wrinkled. If it did well in the spring, I planned on air-layering verses a re-pot. Any ideas about the wrinkling? Help appreciated.

First thought verticillium wilt. After some research it looks a lot like Maple leaf blister and Anthracnose together.

Not sure there is a good solution to solve this issue. Please do not put in compost… solid waste and make double sure your tools are disinfected.

I had a couple maples that did this after their first set of leaves were destroyed by a hard late freeze. I think the buds were damages but I am not certain. It is just about 3 out of well over 100 maples.

I have had this after late season frost.I removed the leaves and this did not return. Not 100% it was the frost, as I was also looking for fungal causes such as what @Deep Sea Diver suggested.

When I have wholesale leave challenges I just defoliate, treat against fungals with a basic sulfur spray, and see what the regrowth looks like.
