Is there something different they are doing to Mango fruit here in New Zealand . We get Mangos from Australia which we eat the fruit . We then try get the seed a try and germinate via the normal method . Is there some fumegation process they are doing the stop it germinating ? I would like a Mango tree at home but struggle with the germination process .

Mango seeds, particularly those who have been in hydrocool storage, which is nearly all we see at the supermarket, are a bit harder to germinate. Most of the time the seeds rot before germination happen. However, you can improve your chances by a whole lot by removing the outer shell. Take a pair of shears and cut the pod at the flat end just enough so you can pry the outer shell apart. Remove the shell and germinate the seed inside as normal. This will make the seed germinate in a few days instead of weeks or may be not at all.

Thanks , I'm trying glad wrap instead of paper towels ( hopefully it works )

Take it out of the wrap. Remove the outer shell. If the seed looks green, put in the potting soil. If it is black and soggy, throw it away. No waiting needed.

Here is a Keitt mango I just took out if my refrigerator and ate for breakfast. I cut the seed and found the core green. I just put it in soil. I will let you know in a few days.

I’ve wondered what the seed of a Mango actually looks like. Now I know. And, Mangos certainly have a tough exterior protective shell?

Yes. The shell is tough and the seed sometime rots before the shell opens.

The easiest method to germinate mango seeds is to remove the husk. Ensure the seed is green/white. Make sure you don't cut the tip on the short end of the curve. Take a paper towel and wet it, then squeeze out all the water, wrap the seed in the paper towel. Then put it inside a sandwich bag and place it in a warm dark place. Usually on top of the fridge works really well. Check the bag ever several days. Moisten the paper towel as needed. Once the root emerges about 1", removed the seed and plant it in good draining soil as deep as it is tall. This process can take 1-3 weeks.

Mangoes don't tolerate cold not one bit. Not sure how cold your winters are, but if it drops below 50degree F you will want to bring it inside and provide strong light.

Keep in mind mangoes don't come true from seed......as far as I know. Good luck.
