After two years on the wait list Julian Adams‘s sent a nice Zushio White Pine our way.

This cute little guy (about 7” ) will be staying in the pot provided as recommended for three growing season…. Thus this thread will go on for quite awhile..

Miramax dose yearly. No styling, just building strength. Wintering over in the cold frame.

Just to give an idea how small the foliage is on this tree, I took an image of the Zushio White Pine with a dwarf ‘Myojo’ White Pine in the background.

those needles are incredible. do you know anything about the growth rate? any plans to propagate down the line?

Congratulations. It is the most coveted of all JWP. At the winter silhouette show last December he sold a couple larger ones that were in training. I think they were a couple thousand each, or close to it.

Thanks! Just happy to get one. Now the next challenge is to keep it alive 😎.

We have three other types of JWP here from various ages, many years to 3 yoa from pots to ground. So this little guy ought to fit in nicely.

Major issue is a media that I am not familiar with… looks like mostly turface. I’ll check his book as he mentions there what media he uses. It’s a bit too finicky for us, but if Julian uses it successfully, we’ll find a way to adapt.

Pretty decent, if happy, considering it’s an ultra dwarfish needled JWP.

No plans at present to propagate. We already have too many little trees experiments and projects going on. Anyways, gotta get a critical mass of roots and foliage first. Maybe when there is enough foliage to discard, this decision will be revisited.

My first task is to read Julian’s ”Growing Pines for Bonsai” Zushio sections over again. (He has a good section on growing Zushio by air layer and cuttings there). If you haven’t got a copy, it’s worth seeing how he does things with pines. It was 25.00 plus postage when I got my copy a couple years ago.

I bought his Growing Pines book and I've read it twice. Great information and value. Im also on the Zuisho list so I'm 1-2 years out. Cool to see yours!

In Julian's book he mentioned using Turface in his soil mix, and provided his mix proportions.

I’m meeting up with Julian at the Nationals this year to collect my Zuisho and a princess persimmon! I’m more than a little excited!

Way cool!

Of you haven’t ordered it already please be sure to get at least 1-2 of his little bottles of Micromax for the Zuisho.

Best

Yes. We use both moss and shallow rooted succulents in our bonsai that do not go in the greenhouse.

Looks weird tho purists, but can easily be removed if display is coming up.

I love it! I know i have at least another year on the list, but I'm already so thrilled to get a Zuisho from Julian. Such beautiful foliage. Very interested to see how your tree progresses in the coming years!
