two things... the first being that most of these of any size have been trained to grow as a telephone pole so to speak, so it is harder to find one that doesn't have a completely straight trunk.
the second being that I have seen the needles actually reduce in size with a greater amount of foilage... similar to how a ponderosa pine might do.
Now how far they do is another story...
I would agree that these need to be taken advantage of more.
