So I saw this little privet on eBay and liked the base and saw some potential so I bought it..

I’m thinking I’ll let it get established before I do any “big” work on it but I don’t know the best time to do work on these trees.. I do kind of want to get it out of the soil it’s in. Would a repot now be a bad idea? I just filled it in with a little pumice for now.

Anyhow, here’s the tree and a crappy sketch of where I think/am hoping I will take it. What do you think?

These things are pretty much indestructible.

As long as you don't cut anything off the top and bottom you can repot these anytime during the growing season if the tree is healthy. Yours look healthy enough I think.

I repotted one of mines about 2 weeks ago and it acted like nothing happened. I didn't prune any leaves and just very minor root trimming.

Hello ,
I think it will make a very nice little tree .

On the first photo and on your drawing i found maybe the movement of the drunk more pleasant .

Repotted.

It exploded with new growth (forgot to take pic) so I cut it back, rewired it and defoliated hoping for ramification. This grows like a weed, the roots are already growing out of the bottom again. The back shows the branches better, not sure why.

Nice
Developing rapidly.

If the branches show better from the back, consider switching back for front. It is not unusual for the "front" to change several times in the development of most bonsai. No reason to be overly attached to one side or another. The best view, should become the front.

Looks like Cousin It now. I’m gonna have to let this thing grow wild to get those branches thicker, once the wire came off the branches came down. This was a good experience, I feel I got decent ramification but the branches aren’t strong enough for it.

No before pic but this thing got real hairy. So much the lower branches were getting weak so I defoliated most of the top half so the lower branches get more sun a two weeks ago. I wonder if I should repot this tree even though it hasn’t even been A year. The pot is literally overflowing with roots, even the fert baskets are getting pushed out of the soil. Water still flows through so it’s not compacted. Any thoughts? Next time I’ll leave about 20% of the roots rather than 50%. 🤦🏽‍♂️
