Lets go airlayer my Japanese Maple!

I've actually used a large knob cutter to bite through the bark and into the hardwood, and the layer was successful. I think it wou8ld be hard to remove "too much" unless the stock is thin trunked.

Max. The pic was from August. I left them on the tree and wrapped them with even more moss and soil. They are about the size of soccer balls. If I would have cut them off they would have been in the shed on the floor where the mice could get at them.
 
Yeah....

I saw a European feller cut a 3 inch trunk to like a friggin pencil and it worked.
