My Larches are popping out as we have had some warmer temps. I have left this outside and was wondering can I leave it with temps over the next 3 days saying below freezing, low 30’s high 20’s. I did bring it in Iast night and put it back out as temps warmed up.

Mine are popping too but not quite that advanced. I have found them pretty hardy as long as you haven’t done any recent root work.

Keep it in the shade & out of the sun if you can.

Nice! Looks like they were recently watered too.

So that’s the kind of wisdom one tucks away in the back of their mental bonsai library for the future 😉

Larches are pretty cold hardy, but at this point we’d protect anything below a slight morning freeze that we cared about. Better to be safe than sorry.

I’m the same way, even with my conifers lol I have zero problem doing so. Maybe it’s due to this being my first Winter-to-Spring transition and I’m still young into this lifelong passion/hobby/obsession. But I don’t mind.

Do you keep these pretty shaded in the summer? I didn’t know larch could make it through the summer in GA!

They might be (probably) Japanese larch which can tolerate warmer temperatures but I don't know if even those can be that warm

These are Japanese Larch saplings that I purchased last December so haven’t spent a summer in GA. As I have read more, I am thinking this may have been a mistake. I will keep them in filtered shade once temps consistently climb above the 70’s. Hoping for the best, planning for the worst.

I have both Japanese and American larch here in Asheville but then it rarely gets above 85 degrees in summer and cools off appreciably at night so they seem to do OK. I have found out the hard waybthough to keep them in shade during the summer and keep them wet. They are also pretty sensitive to root disturbance. I have seen a few growers in Tokyo with Japanese larch and it can get very hot there in summer so you may be successful.

I keep mine in morning sun till about noon, then in the shade for the rest of the day. Good Luck. :)

Been trying to get my fingers behind what is the biggest challenge for larch
I am slowly reaching the conclusion that is not only the peak daytime temps, but more importantly, lack of cool nights thats to seems to be an issue.
