Late summer 2024 I planted two small larch seedlings in a big planter, in standard compost mixed with loam, sand and some bark.

For 1 and a bit growing seasons they have done very well, trunks have tripled in girth, many branches have developed and its height has tripled.

I am in zone 9B, south UK 🇬🇧, this summer has had some record breaking heat waves, including the hottest day on record for may (I believe), and the most multiple heatwaves in one month on record.
Regardless of that, my larches in the ground have all been in full sun for all of it and not shown any signs of stress at all, just healthy growth.

There isn’t much information out there regarding transplanting or collecting larch, or at least not for my uses.
So I was just wondering what people think about moving these to a grow pot, ie when to do so ?

Autumn after leaf drop ( which neither have shown any sign of yet) seems a good option, lots of root, warmish soil and cool air.

January when ground isn’t frozen ? , tree is fully dormant and roots can be manipulated more .

Early spring ? When buds extend.

Id be using 50% perlite, 25% pine bark chips, 25% composted bark.
Kept out of winds and rain, under a pergola …

Any thoughts ?

When the buds glow golden, is the time to repot larch. You'll know it when you see it.
Hey thank you
I’m guessing, late winter early spring is the time this may happen ? Regardless of that, weather conditions would be on the up around this time…
The trees are pretty young, I’ll go for it, thanks again

Yeah, I don't remember the time exactly, but it was in the beginning of the growing seasons. My larches keep burning up in the summer, so I don't have any anymore, but all repots and recoveries went great.
The buds will expand a little and turn from that dormant orangy brown to shiny gold. That's the perfect moment.

I find larch can be transplanted any time from the moment they start turning yellow untill the first bud opens.

In your region I personally would go for collecting as soon as the foliage starts to turn for winter giving the tree a chance to reroot before winter and having a headstart for spring.
