LA Garden JBP

How many grafts do you think you'll attempt next year? I've found it quite difficult to scion graft on old trees as the cambium isn't green but more of a dull brown which is harder to see when you are trying to match the scion up. Do you graft more in case some fail? I only had 2 out of 7 grafts take last year on my old JBP...

I’ll do as many as I have scions to for. Hopefully 20 or so. It is a bit tough an old branches as the bark gets thick and you have to get a feel for lining up the cambium layers.

Just an update. Decided not to decandle this year. It seems strong, but last year it just set buds and didn’t send any summer shoots.

Does it have some old soil still under the trunk? When my pine needles get lighter in color close to the fasicle, I tend to think it’s staying too wet. I had to get scary aggressive on one from Telperion farms this spring to get rid of field soil and a bunch of rotten roots I should have dealt with years ago.

Hi Brian. I’m sure it does. I removed a bunch at the last repot and I’m sure I’ll remove more next time. Also, we are just coming off a three week stretch where it rained pretty much every day. Things stayed wet for a long time.
