First time collecting this type of tree from a nursey (about 4 weeks ago) and I didn't really do much other than clean out the dead, nip a couple of branches, put in a different pot, and cut back less than 10% of roots.

The problem was that it was buried way too deep (still is), had a weak root structure, has a pretty significant root that I cannot fully get below the line (will address later), and the soil had more than a dozen little white maggots that caused me to carefully clean out.

The bonsai soil is mostly just top dressing.

Question: For this type of tree what is the obvious sign that it is recovering? Is there any specific first year advice for this tree to help keep it alive? I think there is good potential here if I give it a couple of years to recover before messing with it.

Looks great - nice find.

I have one that has been in bonsai culture about 5 years now. You will know it is doing well when it starts putting out lighter green new growth extensions on the tips. Also, these respond well to regular misting after repotting.
