Greetings,

How long do Korean hornbeam seed take to germinate?

Do you have any specific tips for successfull germination of new seedlings?

Thanks in advance,

My first batch of hornbeams didn't sprout, though I only used scarification and no other methods, just popping them in a few pots outside.

My error may have been the need for stratification--a period of heat and cold to encourage the seeds to sprout.

Here is a discussion on it: https://www.bonsainut.com/threads/protocol-for-germinating-korean-hornbeam-seeds.66952/

Good luck!
Thanks,

I have three batches going.

1 just placed in pots, sand ( 1 inch thick) bonsai soil on bottom.
50/50 bonsai soil, potting mix.
100 % potting mix
Soaked seeds for 24/48/ five days
They have been in soil for 5 months , nothing sprouting yet.

One batch, I took some seeds and filed them on 220 sand paper, to break the point on the top of the seed, no help.

Thanks for responding

I'd also like to try putting a few seeds in icetrays and freezing them into cubes, then placing the cubes in perlite/peat mix in the spring. I've seen a few seeds done like this. Worth a shot.

I forgot to mention I planted them when it was freezing outside, kept them watered to assist with stratification.

Thanks
