The official Kokufu website is the Nippon Bonsai Kyokai site. They do have a list of board members, and other rolles for the organization on the site, but unfortunately no lists of entries. I even searched previous years for entry lists and the like and came up with nothing.
Yes, there were a few maples especially that were surprisingly flawed. Inverse taper, wire scars, and heavy twigs/burls. One zelkova in particular was quite rough. I know that only a few weeks ago they were still looking to fill some spots for this second part of the show and today it was full, so it's likely that quality suffered a little bit as a result.

Sugar maples go best with pancake nebari’s.when you see a lot of these shows, if you take away the maples with the pancake nebaris, more often than not youre left with trees that have somewhat mediocre nebari/rootspreads.
we are often led to believe that your nebari has to be of a certain 'standard' to 'pass'.
I often dont see this even in the high prestige shows. unless youre talking about the pancakes. not to take nothing away from the high quality trees though and hard work that goes into producing them. just making an observation
