Kokufu-ten 2023 Picture Thread

Usually, the name of the artist is on one of the the boards in front of the bonsai. Of course, that is not as helpful as an online overview file. I know that this is not uncommon to have. For satsuki bonsai, there are usually lists available of all competition/show entries and authors/artists. If the Kokufu Ten has an official website (in Japanese of course), you might have some luck looking around there. But as Yamabudoudanshi says, he checked and it is not available(?)..
The official Kokufu website is the Nippon Bonsai Kyokai site. They do have a list of board members, and other rolles for the organization on the site, but unfortunately no lists of entries. I even searched previous years for entry lists and the like and came up with nothing.
Here's the site, https://bonsai-kyokai.or.jp/

Thank you for sharing!

Round 2 Today!
To follow up on the roster of names; they do exist. As it turns out they do have them, but both last week and today I was only given the foreigner version of the program which only includes the numbers, species names, and horticularal (Latin?) names.
Upon this realization today, I made sure to get the full Japanese program before leaving, so I'm able to share that today.
It reads: Left to right: Number-location of owner-name-tree species-pot info (sometimes)

There are 70 odd photos, so bear with me while I upload them 16 at a time.

Interesting to see how some of the deciduous material has quite pronounced inverse taper, in what is (to my knowledge) the most prestigious bonsai show in Japan. Even a beginner would get harsh critique over here for having inverse taper, let alone a high profile show tree.

Are we in the west more focused on inverse taper than our Japanese counterparts? Any idea on that @Yamabudoudanshi? (And thank you for posting the pictures!)

Yes, there were a few maples especially that were surprisingly flawed. Inverse taper, wire scars, and heavy twigs/burls. One zelkova in particular was quite rough. I know that only a few weeks ago they were still looking to fill some spots for this second part of the show and today it was full, so it's likely that quality suffered a little bit as a result.
Now if westerners are more focused on inverse taper, it's hard to say. I have a shelf full of Japanese books on bonsai, and watch a lot of other content about bonsai, and have never seen/heard it mentioned, so my hunch is... maybe?

Thanks for sharing btw.
Yes im beginning to think some trees must be thrown in to make up the numbers or something.
This maple again doesnt scream high quality to me, while it has great taper in the trunk and a good nebari, the branch structure seems sub par, even some crossing bits what really stick out. some of the dead straight horizontal branches jutting out with not much taper, some lacking twigs near the base.

when you see a lot of these shows, if you take away the maples with the pancake nebaris, more often than not youre left with trees that have somewhat mediocre nebari/rootspreads.
we are often led to believe that your nebari has to be of a certain 'standard' to 'pass'.
I often dont see this even in the high prestige shows. unless youre talking about the pancakes. not to take nothing away from the high quality trees though and hard work that goes into producing them. just making an observation👀
Sugar maples go best with pancake nebari’s.

Thanks for taking the time to post these.
