Kinzu (Golden Bean kumquat)

Here are some photo's I took from the book, Bonsai Journey, by Min Hsuan Lo.

Keep in mind the small trunks that he chopped are 18-22 years old. Very, very, very slow.

Thanks Leo in N E Illinois.
Citrus can grow in the soil with pH ranged from 6 - 8.
I did not try root cutting on citrus, so I don't have any experience!

Looking good! Mine is just a seedling on it's own roots, so it is VERY slow growing... lol. But I'm really enjoying it anyway! The fruit on mine is just beginning to yellow a bit now.

Thanks for sharing, Bonhe. Good note on propagation. I thought about making cuttings, I may still try some, but it sounds like grafting to rootstock is the better way to go.

That is a lot of fruit for such a small tree. Very interesting thread.
Thank you JudyB. I think it will be an excellent specimen for accent bonsai, won't it?

Thank you Thumblessprimate1. I think the grafting is the best way, however I am planning do some air layering on it this year to see what is different!

Have you tried growing from seed any? I bet it'll take a while before making flowers or fruit though.

I used to have a copy of Min Husan Lo's book, unfortunately after loaning to club members, I never see the book again and I forgot who got it last. If you want to get rid of your copy, please let me know.

Those are Troyer citrus rootstocks for grafting.

This is Meiwa kumquat (Fortunella crassifolia Swingle) grafted on Troyer rootstock 3 years ago.

I will graft Kinzu, Meiwa on Troyer in March.

I cant explain how much this makes me want one.

Is there a kumquat (or similar small fruit orange) that does trunk up quickly?

Would love to see pics of your grafting technique, if you would not mind, no worries if not:)
Of course I don't mind sharing with you the technique. I will try to find out if I keep any grafting pics. If I don't have them, I will take pictures when I do grafting in March.

p/s: Just remind for anyone living in Southern California, this month is the best month for pine or juniper side grafting.

I don't know. I just know that if you want to get the trunk up and fruiting phase fast, you have to graft it.
