Kievnstavick's Collection (aka The Journey of Sticks to Trees)

Pinus contorta
These were grown from seed for a few years prior to coming to me (from the out-of-state friend). In early spring, I repotted them into their own pots. You can see how much it has grown under my care as the internodes began increasing in size. My friend grew them at an angle so I am honoring his design intent by carrying on the idea. I plan on getting some wire on this next year to add some more movement to the trunk line.

Podocarpus lawrencci "Red Tip"
My smallest experiment. A tiny cutting that took and I was intrigued by seeing some mame bonsai. I just so happened to have a tiny pot

Podocarpus lawrencci "Red Tip"
Another cutting that took. This one got a rootmaker pot as was left to grow.

Salix x boydii
I picked this up at my local nursery mid-spring of 2023. I repotted it into a coarse substrate as well as giving a trial to this rootmaker pot. I don't remember if I left it shallow or did full depth for the pot as it has an insert for the bottom that sits in the channels. This produced a single flower this year (that I failed to take a picture of).

Schefflera
I bought this at a club auction mid-summer. These pictures were taken back in late September of 2023 showing the before and after. I defoliated it leaving only the newest of growths and pruned some branches to try and get it closer to the image I had in mind. I plan on getting a much longer pot for it and sitting it on the left. I still need to get the wiring done on this to get a better visual flow to the right. I still need to figure out how I want to address the large "floating" root as it is quite out of place.

Please excuse the picture as it was a quick and dirty edit.

Ulmus parvifolia
I acquired this along with all of the others when my friend moved out of state. I have removed the top layer of soil and replaced it with a course mixture as it was holding way too much moisture. I also removed the dieback on it. Not my best picture in hindsight as it seems very muted even with my amateurs quick edits. I'll aim to do better with the late winter pictures.

Ulmus parvifolia "Seiju"
I bought this from a fellow club member sometime in the early summer. I removed a couple of the larger and uninteresting branches. I plan on reducing the height of it a tad after it expands its buds this spring and to try and build its branching. I did my best to remove the moss growing up the bark and I hope that the "void" left over will start to blend next year. I am still trying to figure out where I want to take this tree.

Zelkova serrata
I acquired this tree in the spring of 2023 during an auction. It was originally owned by Ben B. Seattle. I have only done some minor pruning and maintenance on it. I plan to repot it next year and perform some initial carving under guidance from my teacher. I plan on lowering the tree into the pot during the repot depending on what I find underneath that substrate.

Vaccinium
Specific species is unknown to me as it was given to me practically as is outside of some minor pruning and cutting of the Allium. I hope to progress this further into the next year as the base is interesting to me.

xCupressocyparis leylandii
An infamous 'first' attempt tree at doing bonsai from when I did my first nursery crawl for stock. I don't have high hopes for this, but I do plan on continue to work on this just for kicks. Who knows what could happen. This year, I performed a heavy prune on it as it had turned into quite the sail. It has been in this container for two years.

Outside of a couple new additions that I have yet to capture, several saplings, and a few hundred seeds that I have sown this year this encompasses my current collection of Sticks in pots.
My next update (pending my laziness on the uploading of pictures) should be in a few months with winter silhouette pictures.
