Here is my PJM Elite rhododendron.
Bought last fall on end of season sale. Liked the twisty trunks and saw a thread from @RJG2 here.
Cut out a lot that did not go with the twists and left a lot to see some flowers this spring.
This is just to document its progress, have no idea what I am doing...

Not very happy with the after pic. Looks better in real life...

Thanks for the tag . Good first step; will be interested to see where else you prune after you get some flowers and see if it's similar to what I'm thinking. I have some opinions from this view - but it's mostly just shortening a bunch of things and removing that long branch stabbing me through the head!

It's gently patting you on the head.

Yeah, I left a lot of branches too long.
I really not sure how it is going to respond to pruning. Looking at yours, it looks like the new buds sprout close to the cut.
So, close to the trunk might be the way to go.
I want to observe it for a bit...
