Hello,

I am trying to style this Japanese White Pine and I am looking for some advice. It's nursery stock. I repotted it a week ago (end of January). I repotted the tree so that I am more able to control it''s water and nutrition. The end of its needles are a little brown, and I was not sure if that was due to bad watering or lack of nutrients in the nursery soil. The small pieces of wire that you can see on the images I had put there before the repot, and I left them there. Maybe I should have placed the tree towards the right hand side in the pot, when repotting it, not sure, I put the stone there to fill the empty space.

It's grafted, obviously, the root base is far from great. I hope it smooths out over the years (assuming I can keep it alive!). I hate the long, without taper section of the trunk between the first level of branches and the second; It was dead straight, I managed to give a small curve with some wire recently, at least. Is there any chance it will beak some buds on it? I try to give it as much sun as possible. Should I take it all out maybe and develop a leader from the first level branches?
I feel I should remove soon (not sure when, in the late summer when the tree will have survived the repot maybe? or earlier?) some branches so that I avoid inverse taper. jwp5.jpg

What is the season where you are?
Is it spring time.

Since you just repotted it, the best thing to do is leave it alone until mid to late fall. Let it recover after repotting and grow.

Water it when the soil is almost dry.

yes, beginning of spring. It is temperate mediterranean climate here.

Should I fertilize? With high nitrogen maybe or balanced? No candle pintching at all in the summer?

Since this tree is early in development, I would fertilize regularly (once a month) with balanced fertilizer.

I would not pinch candles this year. Let it recover. Also please research and clarify what techniques you are referring to.

For example candle pinching vs candle pruning are two different techniques. Pruning is done on Japanese BLACK pine, not White Pine. PINCHING is done on JWP typically in the late spring if candles are getting long. We pinch the candles in half, we don't cut them completely.

Many people new to pines confuse techniques used on JBP with those used on JWP. Please research, learn and be sure of the difference before you do work on your tree. Ask questions if you are not sure.
