I’m very excited for this challenge! Since moving from Iowa to Denver ~3 years ago I have had to relearn what I knew about growing trees (and plants in general). We have a relatively large lot for being in the city (0.4 acres), and it was absolutely overrun with weed trees. I have dug up hundreds of Siberian Elm and Buckthorn, and I have been planting various natives to replace them. Many as experiments around the yard, knowing that if they worked out, they would need to be moved.
I will probably end up doing more than 2 trees for this (I don’t mind if that disqualifies me), because it gives me an excuse to play with and document a few species that I don’t see used for bonsai very often.
Some candidates:
Fernbush

Great Western Sage - this was a 4” start about 1 year ago and has taken off

Saskatoon Serviceberry

And a Curl Leaf Mountain Mahogany - my wife already veto’d this one, but it would have been fun
