can we make this bud the new leader?

ill have to try a graft where that branch broke

back buds popping out where ill be able to bifurcate branches close to the trunk.

all these toots were pointing straight down, but it looked like i could make a nice circular root base instead of an exposed root style. trunk is so small i didn't want to screw it down on something, so i came up with this low pain, high impact solution:

Hi! This thread is amazing - I feel like you could singlehandedly be responsible for the future of the Japanese black pine species survival. I have three little one year old seedlings that I am planning to repot this year - what time of year would you recommend? I see conflicting advice online

I've had success with spring repotting. i wait till i notice the candles are starting to grow longer. usually the needles have already changed back from dormant purplish to green. nighttime temps are usually around mid 40°f. i try to catch them right before all the root tips are pushing white. waiting till after your area's last freeze doesn't hurt, either.
the post #131 was the last one of mine to get repotted.

Fantastic progress, I love seeing updates to this thread.

Q: where do you source your colanders? I’ve got 10-15 jbp in 4” pots I need to do something with.

last time i bought some they were the Thunder Group 8" plastic colander. a lot of different places sell them. just saw this vendor while looking up colanders. they have a 6", which i couldn't find years ago.

So cool. A little sad I am not closer to you.

I would love to do a pine-development from seed video, but I do not have masses of pines growing from seed to show all these steps.
