Hello all.

Mum and dad have kindly bought be a Japanese Larch (Larix kaempferi) from a local nursery (Wyevale).

It was on death row, but mums kept it watered and in some sun,and has now given it to me :-D

However, the low end of the larch seems a bit barren (dead) but the top is lush. Is there anything I can do to bring the lower part back to life? Or am I going to have to air layer it next year and use the top half.

Also, I've read the pdf on here about the larch and worried I'm going to do something wrong, but what exactly is back budding? The other thing that's got me confused, how/where do I trim these back?

I'm used to elms and maples, and I'm a little lost with this, so sorry if I sound sooo thick.

Thanks.

Pics are below.

When it comes to turning this is into a bonsai, I'd like to keep it quite tall, around 1.5-2ft.
