Hi everyone! (Barbados Cherry- Malpighia Punicifolia)
Welp, I'm back 6 months after my first post (also needing help lol). Is this little guys dunzo? He hasn't regrown a bud/leave since they all fell off after I received it for Christmas 2023. I've scrapped the bark in 2 spots (circled them in red). Then I circled a weird spot in a 3rd pic- like white something- maybe from laying again the white little rock I had with it? Is this tree beyond help? :( lol

What with it being almost July, I would think it's probably dead. White spot could maybe be some fungus? But also I'm pretty new to bonsai as well, hopefully someone can give you more definite info.

I think its flown the coop. Soil looks reaaaaaly dry. Carol, what kind of moisture do they like?

From your first thread, if it is the same plant, it was a tiger bark ficus. Look at the lenticels on the bark, and the leaves in the old picture. If I had to guess a cause of death, something (maybe dried out too long or waterlogged) got to the roots, the plant was then unable to take up water, and dried out.

Sorry, but not only is it dead, it has been dead for quite a while probably since January. Some of the things you have highlighted are the advancing stages of decomposition.

I'd agree the problem was likely a watering issue that became a root issue.

Thank you for your feedback! Appreciate you. :)

Sooooooooo... I believe that Barbados Cherries are generally considered evergreen. An evergreen species that has lost all its leaves can sometimes regrow them... but remaining bare for 6 months??? I'd say that's fairly incompatible with life.
I fear the same lol. Thank you for your feedback! Appreciate you. :)

I think it's a Dwarf Barbados Cherry and I also think it's dead. I have a couple. I could send you one if you want.
Carol, thank you for your feedback! If you are serious and willing, I'd love another. When I received it, it had leaves and one little cherry growing. A lot of the leaves fell off when I removed it from the giftbag, then it just continued downhill and I wan't able to keep it alive. It was my first bonsai, so I am sure it was me. I'd really like to be successful with one. Thank you again for your time and advice. Appreciate you. :)

Thank you for your feedback! I figured I messed up something with the watering. Appreciate you. :)

Thank you for your feedback! How embarrassing lol! Here I am watering it, changing lighting, etc, and it's BEEN dead for 6 months. Ugh! Appreciate you. :)

I feel ya. No need for embarrassment. It's hard to give up on something like this. Did it with my first bonsai as well. Live and learn.

No problem, I'd be happy to send you one. Keep in mind they aren't anything great. We're leaving for vacation Saturday for a week, so remind me.
