Welcome to the Challenge! Please use this thread if you plan on entering the “Intermediate Category” for the First Annual Box Store Challenge – Fall Edition. As a reminder, the Intermediate Category allows the use of juniper plant material only. Plant pot size will be limited to approximately 1 gallon (2 gallons is too big). Purchase must have been made at a box store or non-bonsai related nursery. Cost cannot exceed $30.00 (unless you live in a “high cost” area and disclose by way of asking on this thread prior to making the purchase). Purchase must be made from September 6 through September 17, 2014. However, if you had purchased your material prior to September 6th and it has a legible price tag on it for this challenge it will be okay. For any future challenges you must have a dated receipt within the announced date range. It cannot be stressed enough to please keep in mind this is supposed to be a fun and challenging learning experience for all to enjoy. The objective is to see what you can do with inexpensive landscape material.

Participants will post three entry photos on this thread by midnight September 17th (in your own time zone) to qualify. Please include the following in your post:

1. One photo of the material/tree in the pot “as purchased.” Judging will consider the “before” material.

2. One photo of the nursery where the purchase was made

3. One photo of the dated receipt (or legible price tag attached to the pot or plant)

4. Juniper variety

Remember, the tree must be displayed in the pot it came in. You can remove some of the soil, cut around the rim or take it out of the pot to work on but finished photos must show the tree in its original pot. You can change the display angle anyway you like by placing it in another pot or however you wish to do it. But, photos must clearly show the tree in the original pot. Also, you may top dress the soil with bonsai soil, rocks, moss, etc. to enhance your presentation. However, if it doesn’t fit within the diameter of the pot then it cannot be used. Also, no Tanuki, adding additional deadwood or grafting is allowed.

Once you have submitted your entry photos you can begin working on your project. Most importantly, keep it fun!!

ON YOUR MARK, GET SET, GO!

**VISITORS: If you’re on this thread and you have no idea what’s going on or want to be a part of the fun then feel free to ask.

Looks like a pretty nice nursery. Please update your profile with your location. Also, can you get a photo of the nurseries business sign? Just want to keep everything fair. Nice material as well.

Hey guys. Here my entry. Grabbed it while grocery shopping. Didn't have time to pick I had to blind grab. Wife wasn't waiting around: )
Tag says green spreading juniper. Lol

Juniperus Chinesis Sea Green

I was able to find one at Home Depot...1 gal for $6.98, not much selection around here, but this should do the trick.

I stopped by 2 Lowe's and a Home Depot. Only small junis I saw were burnt, dying, or dead. So I stopped by the Great Big Green House and picked up this pronana for a 10er. Since this is technically less than a gallon, do I get extra credit? :)

Sure! Here's a Sticker you can wear all day :p

Here's mine. Also from Walmart (forgot to take a picture of the garden center area). One of four remaining Juniperus Chinensis "Sea Green." I actually went to two Lowes, two Home Depots, a Menards, and another Walmart on this trip before I found an appropriate candidate. Slim pickins.

And for all you people complaining about the sideways pictures, both were taken with the phone vertically in portrait mode.

Hey! I made contact with a Lowes that has "Sea Green" and "Blue Star" didn't think to ask how many they had. I plan on heading up Saturday...but...maybe I might make that tomorrow. Just to make sure I get one. Called all around to box stores and nurseries up that way. No one else has any that came up in my google search. (The size I need) Nice foliage yours has.
