Was out inspecting growth on my trees today and came across several leaves with these insects on the under sides of the leaves.

What kind of insects are these and what should I do to combat them?

Looks like some kind of aphid. I use a Bayer 3-1 insecticide.

Aphids are relatively common on new shoots on Japanese maples. Most insecticides will deal with aphids as they have soft bodies. You can also squish them with fingers if you want to avoid the chemicals.
