Hi everyone, I am very new to Bonsai. Recently i purchased nursery stock of mugo pines. I want to cut branches and repot them into a nicer pots. Is this a good time to do it? I live in San Jose California. Had anyone from the SF bay area have had luck with their trees surviving after re potting in fall? Thanks in advance. Any advise will be much appreciated. cheers!

Welcome to Crazy!

Nicer "looking" pots aren't always functionally "nicer" in the end.

Sometimes they don't look nicer either if the tree dies!

NO! When is good time to repot normally should be put in bigger container, box or ground for development of trunk.
Only trees ready for display or show need or effectively use "nicer" pots. Grasshopper first learn patience. Rome not built in one day and same for Bonsai;).

Boon has a bonsai nursery in the San Fransico area, drop in and ask him about mugo.

When reading Vance Wood's mugo instructions, remember Vance is in the ''Great White North'', where is is very cold in winter. In the SF area you may have a very different time table. The basics are the same, only prune and repot while the mugo is in active growth, but when on the calendar this is will be wildly different in SF than in central Michigan. Talk to locals, like Boon or his students and see what they do.
