Looking to potentially collect this Dogwood from being removed for a construction project. There are 2 dogwood. One has a 6" wide trunk and the other is about 9-10". Is it wishfull thinking that I can have the arborist cut the trunk about 18" from the ground and collect about a basketball sized section of rootball?

Regardless if this is a good fit for bonsai, I can be the one to determine that in my own backyard, I just want to make sure that this is even possible.

Why not try and collect as much of the tree as possible, before doing any pruning? Take what you can and establish the tree in your own yard. You can decide "yay, or nay" in regard to bonsai, at any time.

Vicn, thanks for the suggestion.

Unfortunately, the tree will most likely be cut down in the next 24hours-48hours. The two dogwoods are tagged for removal. The 6" caliper dogwood is proabaly 12-15 tall. Without pruning and depending on the size of rootball we could achieve, the tree could easily weigh well over 250lbs at that point. The 10" could easily weigh twice that.

So, it sounds like, I'm going to grip it and rip it. Cut trunk at 18-24" above soil. Gather a beachball size of root ball. Pot up in a soil of my choice (don't want this to be a debate on soil) and wish it well.

Dogwoods are short lived trees and this one has no taper, and would take decades to grow anything worthwhile assuming it survives the collection which will be difficult at best... go for it!
This post is priceless.....
