I think eventually this will become a twin trunk
Twin trunk should have both trunks originating from the base. So perhaps a main lower branch incorporated into the overall design! Here is a picture from Kokufu, possible direction.

Yeah this is more like what I meant. I guess I just didn't use the right wording to describe what I meant I'll be going for with this tree.

Another question: Should I be fertilizing at this point or do I need to wait until the tree pushes new growth again? All of the previous foliage seems either dead or not in great condition. I do see some smaller buds on branches and the trunk, but I can't tell if those are growing any yet. Granted it's only been about 5 days since I've had the tree so...

But yeah, any words of hope would be helpful. Worried I will have wasted a good amount of money for a tree that isn't going to make it. But I guess that's just apart of bonsai probably.

No immediate need to fertilize. You can easily wait for the tree to show good growth.

Tip: Trident leaves that are just emerging look for a bit of time like their are droopy. SO do not worry ;)

Here are some updated leaf pictures. Not sure if the new buds look okay, but it seems the leaves that had already pushed out aren't doing quite well. They've been in this state for about a week now and are not improving. Idk if it's from wind or just the shock of not being in soil for a bit.

The tree has been protected from frost.

looks like the leaves already had black edges when you received the tree?

Give the tree a few weeks to respond. Improvements rarely happen overnight.

Here is a 2 week post-potting update. New growth is starting to push pretty good and doesn't appear to have any dryness or blackening anywhere yet. Some of the old growth remains and is still concerning me a bit. I think it's hard to tell if the old leaves are affected by some sort of disease or if they are just drying out from the roots that were supplying them being cut/pruned and disturbed.

Any updated thoughts or suggestions?

It is too early to judge the situation. I would place cut paste or liquid sealer on the branch that was shortened ( fourth picture from the left in the post above}
I would also be prepared to treat for aphids or other biting/sucking insects that will be attracted to the new buds and fresh leaves.
At this point the buds look normal, once the leaves open and develop you will be able to notice their condition. Depending on the weather this could take 1-3 weeks from now. During this stage of recovery protect the tree from cold, wind and direct sunlight on warmer then average days.

4 week update:
Really nice growth pushing. Not noticing the black tips or edges on any of the new leaves really. There are a few leaves with small brown spots on them. Very sparse. I've also started fertilizing as well.

Any further suggestions are much appreciated.

8 week update. Tree has really filled out nicely, but unfortunately is still somewhat struggling with black leaf tips. I have tried some fungal sprays and have removed the affected leaves, but leaves continue to get the black tips unfortunately.
