I received my first ever mame yesterday. It's a privet, I believe. I nestled it in a water feature thing I had.

Everyone loves them, and if they don't they should. :) It's a different world, balancing sunlight, fertilizer, and watering. I'm still trying but with a tiger bark ficus this time. Mame feels/seems like I should be retired before I fully commit.

You can find a lot of good Mame threads searching this site.

Oooh, I know what I'm doing all night long!

Keeping something alive in a pot this small is a real challenge and that's a really tiny pot. I tried and failed many times in my early days of bonsai so had to give up for a while.
Now that I've mastered the arts of watering and pruning and general care, I've moved back toward smaller trees and having much more success now.
Good luck with this little tree but if it doesn't make it, know you are not alone and maybe get more experience before trying the littlest ones.

Filling the top part with water and then restict the water flow to say a pin hole drip might help for semi self watering system.

Oh I have no doubt it's a dead tree standing. But, it was a freebie, and I'd like to try. And I want to learn. I figure that it's worth a shot.
