I bought three ginseng ficus today because they're my favorite "bonsai". It gave me a horrible idea for a group planting.

For the record, I'm pretty sure every ginseng ficus is a total goober of a plant and is only a casual bonsai.

But they are my favorites. They're amazing and I love them. They make me smile everytime I see them.

I wanted to see what they look like planted in one container.

I love it. I am obsessed with these guys. So I had a wonderfully terribly awfully horribly ridiculous idea.

So I bought an 18 inch pot.

The ficus are going to break their chains and escape their Terra Cotta prisons.

I think I'll add a plant like lysimachia to fill the pot and dangle over the edge.

I know, this is only tangentially bonsai related. But you guys have totally inspired me to try a group planting.

I'm really excited for this.

Here's hoping the ficus are forgiving of my silly little idea!

Step 1: cuttings.

I took 5 cuttings and used rooting hormone.

Everyone chipped in.

Even Benji.

The Three Amigops supplied most of them, but I couldn't let my silly little shenanigan start without Benji's input.

So, with a real live start, my passion project has officially begun.

Good luck! These are so fun, I really like them too, big ficus fan. Don't underestimate how much a ficus can grow in under a year! Mine have put on serious growth 🌱🪴

They're intense little plants when it comes to growth, for being the goofy goobers of the ficus world!

Hahah yeah! My favorite ficus is, ficus natalensis, it's not shy to shoot out aerial roots even if it's not very humid, just slightly above room humidity and it's gone crazy for me.

Decided to update, because I think I finished it.

I'm declaring it done. It's barely bonsai. But I'm pleased with it. At least I have something pretty for next to my front door!

The cuttings all rooted and now I have something to do with all my pretty tiny plants.

There's ficus pumila- creeping ficus, dragon's tongue, pan am pilea, and moss in there. Plus the ficus cuttings that will hopefully grow bigger!

Wow, this is awesome. Really excellent use of accessible material, and a fun and engaging display concept. I really can’t emphasize enough how cool it is to see someone already thinking making such outside the box displays in their first year.

I really appreciate it! I consider it questionably bonsai, but really pretty to look at. It makes me feel happy. 😄

Honestly, the other plants I got for less than 20$ all together at my local big box store.

The biggest hurdle will be keeping it alive!

I seriously adore this! So so so much, just got a gensing from IKEA not sure if I can save it but I love how goofy these guys are! I'm excited to see this display age and grow

I think it's worth a shot. My first guy survived 3 years of off again, on again neglect.

I never like to give absolutes, but ginseng ficus mallsai are too hardy for their own good!

As for me, I'm obsessed with how sassy they can look. You can catch me talking to the ones at a big box store, telling them how they're such good little plants!
