Hydrangea petiolaris cordifolia

hello, here's another tree from my favorite nursery in "Brittany" (Bretagne in french)

I dunno how the professional got, but i falled in love with its bark and prostred look (it's 70cm high approx) ->


The tree after i bought it (35€ ) with a small forest of picea glehnii ->



The nebari is good ->




I repotted it this spring in akadama ->




2 week ago, with the new leaves ->



Today, with bigger leaves ->


Normally this tree makes big white flowers in June, time will tell, it will be a surprise..

I dunno at all if it is easy to cultivate, or if it is a good tree for Bonsai.. i will see

hello, i planted this forest in an aquarium stainer and then in the ground. I plan to let it grow during next few years and to keep the trunks close together like an unique "big" trunk.

This picea forest comes from a nursery in Brittany. The owner multiplies conifers by seeds (that he buy) and the deciduous plants doing cuttings

This tree didn't flower (yet?). Maybe next year
It prefers sun in the morning and then shadow than sun all the day long. With full sun, the leaves have some burns even if the sunlight in Normandy isn't very strong

thanks. yes its bark is very very interesting because it brings some character to the tree. And its nebari is good too. I forgot to take a pic of it but i'll do next time.
Yes no problem with the roots : it produces small white roots in the soil. I put the training pot inside another pot to maintain the roots in a fresh soil. I water & fertilize it like my palmatum : once the soil starts to become dry, i water it. I don't say it is the good/best way to do, but the roots grow. I hope that with its new exposition (east) and watering with some rain water next year, it will bloom (?) but i will enjoy it even if it doesn't bloom anymore.
I had the same cultivar 'cordifolia' tree growing on a wall, a very old tree, and after 20 years, it didn't produce flowers anymore. So it seems that with the 'cordifolia' sub-specie, flowers are not forever

You repotted 2 times/one year? No wonder no flowers! Other than mud substrate great tree. More inclined is better. You have natural upright Cascade. Too upright cannot hang past pot very well. Considering abuse must be pretty durable.

Ok, so it's the repotting this year that prevent the blooming.
I just repotted this tree once in spring. The orange color pot is a pot that i use to cover the Bonsai Pot, to keep the rootball fresh. thx for aestethetics advises. I prefer the trunk line of the 1rst pic & the nebari will be better in this position (more balanced and larger)

Depending on when you pruned it may be why it did not flower. I’m not familiar with this species but some only flower on old wood while others new wood.

hi, i didn't pruned it since i have it. This year, it produced just the short shoots with leaves that you can see on the pics

When it gets stronger, after a year or two, let the shoots elongate and they will produce flowers. In the meantime, give it moderate fertilizer. Hydrangea flower on new shoots.

Yes, plus it's all hydrangea seem to need. I have a few non-bonsai hydrangea and they do great and stay manageable with just a little fertilizer. Yours looks great by the way.

thank you very much, i bought it because i immediatly loved its character in the nursery ^^ I didn't know if it was possible to grow it in a pot, or make a Bonsai of it, but it was just 35€
