I think you are all right about that tree not being JM. The buds are gigantic and do look like a magnolia. The owner claims it is "Bloodgood Maple," but it is definitely taller than 20 feet and it's very possible he is wrong.

But he's my boss, so I'm going to take some cuttings anyways! Experiment.

"Bloodgood" can reach a height in excess of 35 feet.
But this tree is the magnolia I described.
