How can I get bonsai stock ?

I know this was a stupid idea but I don’t care since I made the money from an Instagram theme page but I just bought 3 beauty berrys and 2 Japanese sweet flags !

But you may as well just tell him which tree to kill for you and save the money on shipping!

I'd be less apprehensive of it wasn't for that Rona. But counting on decent delivery times now is a bad gamble.

Not to mention the zoning difference, which is still an even bigger factor.

Stay East.

Don't spend half your budget on shipping.

Someone out there should already be supplying you with stock to mess with. If everyone on here doesn't have a tree that would be better off with you, cared for for 40 years longer, I'd be surprised.

Of course there is the whole, asking a youngin for their address thing or whatever......
But we should be showering you with material.

That will pass. Its really too early for shipping seedlings yet anyway.
Brent usually doesnt ship until March so there is plenty of time for the mail/shipping system to sort itself out.

Where did you find them? Did you get them online?

Its probably not dead, its winter and beauty berry are deciduous so they wont have leaves right now
Also from what I read, they are known to die back in very cold zones

Oh yeah I’m so stupid . If it’s dormant which it is then everything is good. I’m in Nj so I have perfect weather for beauty berry

Not stupid, you just didnt expect to see a plant with no leaves.
Now you are going to have to just leave them alone until spring except for giving them water when they need it.
I would also keep them protected and not leave them out on a bench or something.

*edit* By protected, I dont mean bring them into the house.

Yeah I can get a Japanese maple to use as a mother plant. Did you say you have them now and the other ones later or all of them later ?

How do you think these pre-bonsai gurus get their material for ten or twenty dollars and sell it to you for 40 to 200? Take a chance go out and find a piece of nursery material and start cutting it down. Michael Angelo was once asked about making the sculpture of David how do you make such a beautiful figure out of a block of Stone? His reply: Remove everything that's not David. Such is the truth of bonsai.

While some individuals do that, what I offer I propagated or air layered myself..........some people are into "tree flipping" I actually get more enjoyment from just the challenge of trying to get a cutting or air layer to root or a seed to germinate.

Also Vance has been lucky enough to find decent mugos with actual trunks at his local nurseries which is mostly what he grows as bonsai. Whereas around here NJ/Southern NY, pretty much all mugos are pretty much just a bunch of small trunks in a pot with no real trunks at all. They look more like octopus then they do trees.

Nursery stock is all I have right now "So I gotta dance with who brung me"
