How big is too big?

I've been noticing something the 10 years I've been in this hobby. I've collected 150+ trees and found that the bigger the tree, the more and faster it branches out. I don't know all the technical aspects, but generally, the energy of the tree is stored in its roots, trunk and branches. A trunk 22" in diameter and roots 2-3" in diameter have the potential for light years more energy than the lowly pinky-sized sapling. That idea has been shown to be true time and time again.
 
Would you say that phenomenon extends to most conifers too?
