HOA Ban Invasive Plant

The photo for the article looks like a generic BBC drama. A lot of hard hitting points on both sides, but man, just a sign? I wonder what an ivy plant can spark?!

If they come after you tell them you didn't get the memo because your server had been scrubbed. That should do it and buy you a couple years, at least past 2016.

I like invasive, nature growing everywhere, i hope they will take over the world.

We have an HOA here at our place and honest the written rules all suggest that they just want all of the places to look similar and not cluttered. I did a lot last year to the rear lot including a new cedar fence which I never cleared and know they checked it all out at least twice. Funny part is the next two units got sited for general "cleanup" and I thought they looked nice... There is a huge difference in potted and planted. Last season I had a hanging basket of Poison Ivy and not a word was said about it. This year I plan to dig a rather large Wisteria and being kept in a container I do not expect any crap from them. Also as earlier stated they really don't realize what they are looking at most times. I have potted Graveyard Moss out front and in back and they commented how nice it looked

If dumb enough to live under communism move to Russia. Do not encourage any such collective socialism in the USA.

If they ask about your plants just say theyre Bonsai then they wont have a clue what your talking about!

I'm curious, I am about to buy a home and the HOA is requiring us to read the HOA regulations and part of the regulation states that we are not allowed to grow 8 types of plants that are incredibly invasive and are banned from being grown. Wisteria is one plant I have and wisteria is a plant on the invasive ban list. I haven't yet seen this plant grow any pods and it's not in the ground. I am pretty sure I can't bring it with me...but could there be an exception?

In my current neighborhood (where we are renting while we build a new house) I built two short "wing" fences to either side of the back of the house that were 8' long and were just for privacy and as a windblock. They were far from any property border. The HOA complained to my landlord, and I had to remove them.

Next, I left two garbage cans on my driveway up by my garage door. The HOA complained to my landlord. I opened the garage door and pulled them inside.

After this insanity, I asked my landlord for a copy of the HOA CR&R's. The document was 75 pages long. I've lived for the last 24 years in Southern California in a very nice HOA and have never seen anything like it. You can get in trouble if you plant a rose bush in your front yard. You can even get in trouble if you install "invisible" things like an invisible dog fence or in-ground sprinklers. I can understand things like fencing that runs along a property line needing to be approved, or no overnight parking on streets, but this document was insane. Good thing we will only be here another six months. The landlord was very apologetic because we are great tenants. This is NOT a particularly expensive neighborhood, either. Mostly starter homes.

Concur. HOA's are illegitimate shadow governments without portfolio. Plant wisteria, acer ginalla and kudzu in your front yard and ask them to present governmental credentials when they try to rip it out.
It is insane how some people dont understand the basics of living in societt. Illegitimate shadow goverments? Lol. Right wing paranoia would be laughable if it hadnt ruined America

You likely have a neighbor who doesn't like you, or one who drives by your house regularly. Shit like this can happen when a busybody neighbor complains to the board, or a board member who is the same--as a one-time board member, I've been there and listened to more idiotic complaints than I care to list and shouted down asshole fellow HOA zealots. HOA's are all different, made up of different people at different times.

Yea I am very glad we dont live in a neighborhood with an HOA.
Some of those people are downright morons and their rules are moronic.
I would be going to war with anyone that made complaints like that.

LOL no apologies necessary from me... I lothe HOAs and firmly believe they were all picked on as kids and now they have their chance to be bullies. I think they should be outlawed. Run for your board and then get a vote of your members to disband the HOA.
Now, now. While a few HOA members are power-hungry, most volunteer to serve simply das a means to protect their investments. Both my husband and I served on HOA boards so that we knew what was going on.

I think the best policy is to say " I have a wisteria bonsai. I've had it for X years. It has never gone to seed and can't put out runners (it's in a pot). If it were to put out a seed pot, I would clip it off as it would be stealing energy from the tree." I bet the HOA board would not be such dicks that they would ban your wisteria bonsai.

Nothwithstanding the above, I would NEVER, EVER purchase a house with an HOA again!
