Help with water jasmine

I really think the overwatering.
I am going to try one more in the spring and any tips are greatly appreciated.
If mine ends up not making it, I too will totally try another. I really like the leaves and flowers and wouldn’t want to give up on such a nice species…

Looking back, next time I’ll probably get a grow tent to better control the conditions and change the soil so it’s a lot better draining, along with a more porous pot. I started to raise humidity two weeks ago to try to get more growth. Seems like that was the nail in the coffin because it might have made the soil dry out a lot slower, keeping the bottom of the pot constantly wet. A better soil and pot would probably prevent that.

Its a little bit late maybe but for others helpfull.
I‘m in loose contact with an indonesian farmer. For wrightia they use black lava sand mixed with 10 % compost and water daily . I have one too and use this recipe and never had problems.View attachment 599084
So, I got one yesterday. It's a bit chlorotic. I will repot it in a bit, we are having cool and wet weather now and I want to wait for a warm up.
This is my 3rd and final one.
I have no troubles with them in summer, but so far killed two in two consecutive winters.
@hagmanma
Can you share how do you keep yours in winter, please?

Nice tree Kate!

I do the following: as soon temperature goes below 68f/20c i move the tree inside.
In the house i have a 250w led growlight.
But i run it at low level. All my tropicals are under this light from autumn until late spring. Wrightia needs light if you keep it indoor. In the house the temperature is about 71f/22c. Humidity should be over 50%. If needed i have a little indoor greenhouse to raise humidity. Like this i never have problems.

Good luck!

So sorry to hear that. My Water Jasmine seem to be the least bothered by overwintering indoors. I have full spectrum grow lights, nothing fancy and they get some light from the bank of windows they sit behind. I usually have to trim them a couple of times each winter. What is your overwintering situation?

Oh, my regular water jasmine (wrightia religiosa), the one you sent me, is fine. It actually had seed pods. It It outside now and doing well, too.
It the wrightia vietnamense I keep killing.

@hagmanma

Could you tell me what size are the black lave sand particles you use?
If I estimate correctly by looking at the pic in your post it's about 1/4 inch? 6 mm or about that?
Thanks, Kate.

Hi it is 2 - 4 mm. On top you see some organic material for the moss…

Repotted mine on June 21st and it is doing great so far. The new growth is strong with no signs of chlorosis.
Post in thread 'What did you do today? Show us Pic Required' https://www.bonsainut.com/threads/what-did-you-do-today-show-us-pic-required.58560/post-1194461
Trimmed it today and put cuttings in a makeshift aeroponic soda bottle propagator.

If it makes it to spring, I'll start it's own thread for it.
Two weeks update on cuttings. Seem to be fine...
Removed a couple yellow leaves that fell off.
Sprayed perlite as it seems that the water evaporated/condansated/circulated from the bottom of the soda bottle to the bottom of the stabilising bucket. Also exhaled in the bag a couple of times before closing it as an effortless way to increase CO2 content inside. Heated it's good for plants...

Hi Kate, all,
I also have a wrightia religiosa, and would like to repot it. What substrate are you using?

I am asking because my bonsai club in Malaysia used garden soil cut with sand; online I see people using akadama/pumice/lava mixes; and currently it lives in ‘bonsai soil’ of gravel mixed with organics. I’m not sure what to use to repot the wrightia religiosa. What do you use and why? Thank you in advance!

Background info: it’s definitely still in development, but with its shape and dimensions, I’m focusing more on developing a good branch structure than a super thick trunk.
I’m in zone 8a; I keep it inside in winter under a growlight. Usually it drops all it’s leaves in February or March, then regrows.
I am not succeeding to post a photo as the photo file size is too large and reducing it is not working on my phone.

Hi Suse,
I used small particle bonsai soil I bought on line and added some small pine bark and some coarse black lava sand.
It's doing very well outside now, but the this winter is going to be a real test if it works or not...
I killed two so far in two consecutive winters, they were in much more organics rich soil and I think it was overwatering... I am pretty sure I can't fully imitate the substrate they use for them in the tropics and trying to find my own way here...
I would like to see pictures of yours if you ever succeed with outing them.

Hi Kate,

Thank you for replying!
Mine has survived 2 winters so far - under a grow light + by the window, and with indeed strongly reduced watering. The real challenges were the pests… spider mites nearly got it and killed my vietnamese bluebell. I hope yours makes it!!
What is the bonsai soil composed of? Any idea? Thank you for sharing!
