I bought a trident that will be coming from quite different temps then what I have here and I'm not sure how to proceed.

this is where its coming from https://weather.com/weather/tenday/l/Cordova+TN+USTN0109:1:US

and this is me https://weather.com/weather/tenday/l/83856:4:US

would it be better to put it in the coolest part of the house under some bright shop lights or try to put it outside on the days above freezing then back in at night?

This is the tree in question. No leaves yet but I think I can see decent buds on it, don't really want to kill the thing as soon as it gets here.

I'd assume it's about to break dormancy . Ideally, putting it somewhere dark and cold...but above freezing... would be best. An attached garage would work. Your spring is a ways off and you want to keep it from pushing leaves for as long as possible. Once it has leaves, it'll need as much sunlight as you can give.

If it will be ok in the dark, I can put it in a corner down in the basement. Its considerably cooler and the back wall can be down right chilly. Not ideal but better then trying to keep it on the back porch. Ill do everything in my power to keep it from popping leaves, if it does I'll get it under bright lights.

@source, its already unavoidable lol. Its my Valentines present and has been bought. I'm a bit too paranoid to ask someone to hang onto it. I suppose I should have waited but this tree really spoke to me. Its the shape I've been wanting and I wasn't going to pass it up.

Ideally, the temps in that corner of the basement will be below 40 F, otherwise the tree will quickly start to grow. If the tree does start to grow and have leaves, the best thing to do is the bonsai 2- step...outside during the day when the temps are warm and inside a garage or something similar when the nights are cold... have fun... I've been doing the 2- step for over 2 weeks already:confused:.

Thanks guys. I'll get temps in the basement but I don't think its under 40. If I do the two steps, what should I do on days when its too cold to go outside?

I'm having a bit of buyers remorse this morning. Is that normal when you first start spending more $$ on trees? I'm also worried a bit about the scar on the backside base. It looks like there is a hole there, if so I'll eventually get it filled and try to grow callous over it.

I live around the corner from the nursery. It was 76 here yesterday or so my car said....They're really good people, maybe consider asking them to hold because of the weather. I'd be shocked if they won't help you out. Lovely tree btw, cool shape!

By coincidence, I purchased my trident maple from the same seller out of Cordova, TN in mid-February of last year. It arrived fully dormant or quiescent without any evidence of bud swelling. I don't know how this winter has compared to last, so it could have started to come out of dormancy this year. If it has not, just carry out standard trident maple winter storage.

Matt is a very upstanding seller. Well known in the bonsai circles...what a great tree for the bench. Many put funds on trees that are in quarantine and if the tree doesn't make it. They are reimbursed...he's on a FB group I belong to. He would have held your tree...but...I get your being concerned with an EBay purchase. But...you went with a respectable seller hands down!

Congrats on the tree!

The tree has shipped and should be here in a couple days. Matt did message me, the buds are swelling but not breaking yet, I will do my best to keep it from fully breaking as long as possible.
Glad to hear that he a well know and respected seller. I'm really excited for this tree, I love maples and this will be my first trident.
