I've had this plant for 16 or 17 years, growing it from a little 2" tall start. I know it needs shaped but I'm not quite sure where to start. I've chopped it back numerous times over the years and this is the best its looked but its getting top heavy and the trunk can barely support the weight.
I'd like to encourage trunk growth while having it fill in with more smaller branches. I have no desire to bonsai this so please no suggesting I cut it it back to two little nubs. The trunk is 1.75" at the soil line and its 1' 10" high.

I already removed three small branches from the very front, you should be able to see the fresh wounds in the pictures.

Philly!

As I understand, these root fairly easy.

I would almost be inclined to take all these cuttings from red....aviary-image-1452634724546.jpeg

Leaving kind of the yellow.
Make a similar tree from the right stem.
Use those as the main trees for two groups of a forest planting.

Rooting easy is a understatement, I've never had one fail and I've started a lot off this plant. I've though about cutting it way back to one stem but I kind of like the fork.

Hi GailC, the wisteria in your avatar yours?

Sadly no but I'm hoping to get a wisteria this summer.
