I think you are right. It would also make since. Looking at the picture again I see the rosy flush. I diagnostic sign of nectria.

Nope, definitely hornbeam. You can't see the foliage well enough in the photos, but it's not beech. In any case, I'll get a systemic fungicide soon as I can.
