New to bonsai. Recently was bit by the bug. Always have been into plants and landscaping, and tree work. I've done it for many years and understand the fundamentals of basic plant survival and and really just enjoy playing with plants. I believe I have a natural eye for how finished product should look, even maybe some what in bonsai but it's gonna be that journey to get that finished look that I'm in for a wonderful world of learning because anything outside of what I have read these past 2 months, I don't have a clue lol. So I know a good bit of the basics but still got a lot to learn and a ton of questions!

Well to wrap things up I'll tell ya what I have so far.
I bought three are bonsai from a bonsai grower. Chinese elm, tiger bark ficus and a narrow leaf ficus.
I bought a Walmart ginseng from a yard sale.
I bought a nursery Chinese juniper. And I have a schefflera that I'm also gonna turn into a bonsai. I'm very excited and look forward to embarking this journey and becoming a part of the bonsai society!

Welcome aboard BonsaiHead, enjoy your stay.
This is an awesome place to learn, as the folks here are outstanding!

And you put your location in your profile! Yay. It's important to listen to people who are in your climate, or know it well. My advice is to throw away the ginseng ficus and concentrate on the other trees. :)
Welcome to the forum and the addiction.

Why would anyone throw away a tree? I still got the first bonsai I ever had and it's a ginseng, I got it for my wife and I anniversary showing that something that can potentially outlive our relationship, our life and be there to grow with us plus it's something to work on experiment on gain knowledge on. I hope I'm not being rude but throwing away a tree is unnecessary if I showed you what my little ginseng looked like when I got it and what it looks like now you' be pretty amazed.

Truthfully I did overlook it for a while while I got other interesting trees but it grew and thrived even after pruning those bulging roots off it seemed to just THRIVE.. anyway do what you want but I wouldn't throw it in the barrel..

So show me, I would love to see that transformation.
I see you said you pruned off the bulging roots, that's what I think are ugly about these trees, so in essence you did get rid of the ginseng portion of the ficus, lol. :)
Sorry it was meant not to be rude. I did emoji it, but lets not start anything here on our new friends first post please!

I gotta look threw about a octillion pictures but I'll find them. I kept the main bulbou front roots cause it looked like a nice set of legs ;)

People do occasionally make good trees out of them. Adam Lavigne (adamaskwhy) has some that he's done good things with, and you'd probably never recognize them as having been ginseng ficus.

Yeah I don't necessarily believe the ginseng is the prettiest gal on the street (definitely a ugly duckling lol) but figured it would be a good tree to make mistakes on so I don't do them on the others. I wanna learn to do things such as air layering and grafting and if I screw up it wouldn't be the end of the world. Could even use it to do controlled test on separate effective methods to see which work best.

And if it does adventully turn into something cool, Hey cool lol
Very true, that's why I'd like to see some examples, I've just never seen one that was anything but oogly....
Have fun, and I'll be watching for your threads!

Cool thanks for the support bud. Plan on making a post new about a nursery juniper that I have started a semi cascade with. Hopefully tonight! Here's a few pics of the little ugly fellow lol

I can't find the little baby picture of it but it' definitely a work in progress. I still need to remove the bulb on the far back left MAYBE and I gotta carve the main top where I cut when I first got it. The last pic was a about a month ago and it' siting right under a t5 going nuts the thing looks different by the week. I had the lower right arm wired up nice connecting to the right stiff arm that I removed in the second pic but I'm really just letting it do its thing now, work on the inner structure in its big pot :)
