HBR Job on my Big Juniper

I've never HBR, hope it goes well. Nice trunk movement
Thanks!
I did this HBR job in spring of 2019.
It has gone well, so far.
I figure 2 full growing seasons untouched, should be enough to go ahead with the other half in 2021.
If I do anything with this tree this year, it will be removing a few unneeded branches, I may try an air layer as well.

Well, I was gonna air layer a couple branches, but realized that I'm out of sphagnum....and using pots on horizontal branches is more work that I felt like thinking about today....so I removed some of the branches that were way out far from the trunk and cleaned up the flakey bark a bit.
Looks better already!
Foliage looking superb....if I do say so myself....I don't see any negative issues about this foliage other than the weird color, it may even tighten up more in a small pot some day.
I do want to propagate this plant in the future.

Looking healthy !
About the foliage im on the same page it looks like it is less coarse as i tought as well with mine, still shimpaku or chinensis is way tighter but this will do just fine on a large tree :)
When you plan on styling this one?

Thanks man!
I want to let it grow again this year, then HBR the other side in spring 2021.
Maybe in 2022 it will be ready for some style....

Looking forward to 2022 then!
if it were mine I would think about styling this fall and repot the other half in spring 2021 since it looks like it's damn healthy but still patience never hurt a tree tough lol

Oh....believe me, I'm thinking about it....but I'm resisting myself.
I've killed waaaaaaay to many trees by working too aggressively and too soon.

So, I'm playing the slow game with my 2 junipers....because I have high hopes for both of them and I don't wanna screw it up!

I already feel like I dodged a bullet with the other one when I bare rooted it totally....and it survived without blinking.

I decided the bare rooting was too risky, so I did the HBR method on this one....giving it 2 seasons to fill the new half of the substrate with roots before touching the other half, then another year after the second half.....so yeah 2022! Here we come!

Just taking a look at this weird ass trunkline....trying to study it and think about the future branch placement. I'll have to make some @Smoke stick figures of this one too....

There are 3 main branches.

Now that's a challenge! Contrary to popular thinking, I would be inclined to reduce it to the closest foliage to the trunk, and then let it grow a few years. It seems very top heavy. Otherwise it will need a big Trump combover with the foliage to make it seem like it's lower.

Its looking quite healthy, I fertilized heavily last year.....there are fresh roots coming out of the drainage holes on the side with the new substrate!
I probably can start styling it this fall....

That's basically what it has now a YUGE Trump combover.

I kind of already reduced it to the first mains....
And thanks for chiming in!

If I were to start working now, I would try and take some of the longest whips and wire them and twist them hard and down to the right. Fill the circle.

Get a small canopy working in that void there and tuck it up under the weird curve in the trunk. accentuate that weirdness. Stip the bark on that big deadwood and make it look old.

I appreciate the look Al!
A good thought to get my gears turning....I like the size of what you propose for sure.
It should be doable, there are a ton of branches coming off of that main CombOver branch.

i like what smoke sugests!
i cant help myself tough.... one of my habbits with material is turning it around change the angles in any possible way and look if something pops out to my eye.
i did also with your picture maybe not as extreme as the 90 degree left turn i used but maybe its something to consider as well

Mike, the big branch (black) looks awkward. I'd be tempted to whack, jin, carve it. Shorten the red one and jin/carve it also. Then take the blue guy and wrap/wire the crap out of it and make a big bend with the blue guy like @Smoke suggested. Wait a couple of years for the dieback to occur, then shari the dead areas. Make sure you have a really good root base first. That's one idea anyway.

Much appreciated guys!
I had not really looked at changing the angles yet ..... Will absolutely do so.
Much to consider!
