Was up in Cleveland this past week and spent a day at the Holden Arboretum, saw many many affected beech trees there. I hope they don't start loosing all those lovely old beech.

I haven’t seen any dead trees from this….so far. It’s just very ugly although I can’t imagine how they can keep tolerating it. Mine are still kicking after 9 years of infection. It seems the smaller trees in the understory suffer more. Holden is a pretty amazing place and always something going on.

Holden is wonderful, our first time there and we got a membership so we can visit in each season.

It’s been about a month since the last update, how has this tree done?

Been meaning to update.
So new leaves came out and hardened off. I tested a number of leaves and they all came out negative for the little buggers. HOWEVER, the leaves don’t look anything like a healthy beech leaves. I’m going to attribute this to an unhealthy tree to start and stress from the defoliation. I’m hoping a spring repot and a new start may improve this. 🤷‍♂️🤷‍♂️.
I’m no expert on testing with my $9.00 microscope and inexperience. If after the spring emergence they’re still funky I may send off some leaves to the county extension service. It’s possible the condition may not be related and maybe something totally different. 🤷‍♂️🤷‍♂️

It's been my experience that American beech leaves come out crumpled like that whenever I do something that disrupts the normal cycle of one flush per year—for example, if I prune a tree back hard in June and force it to regenerate from epicormic buds. They go back to normal the following spring.
