I like it as well...
A couple more I found, but they might be to small...

Regardless, anyone of them will help make your tree look awesome,
and for very little money considering.
Let us know what you get
:)

Ok, I think I like this one. Since I don't have photoshop skills, anyone have a few minutes to do a virtual?

Hard for me to make a choice on a pot when I am not sure the tree is ready for a nice pot yet. I think much more work needs to be done before a real determination about what kind of pot until a real form is shown.

This tree seems to be telling me something, yet when I answer the call I am not really happy with that either.

I will let the owner decide.

I agree with you Al, the tree is far from finished. As this is my second year of the Kaikou School, I am required to show a tree as a way to graduate. It's the best I have, the rest of my trees definitely need much more time, so that's why I'd like to pick out a decent pot.

Thanks for your input, I do appreciate your thoughts.

As far as the direction for the tree, I think this tree that was displayed in the gafu-ten would be achievable. It's in the top right of the box.

That would be a worthy goal.

I agree.

That pot in the image is ideal also.

Well after working with Paul Katich from Bellota pots I decided on this 6.5 inch round pot. He was really nice to work with, sent me a lot of pictures and prompt responses. I would definitely recommend him and will probably work with him again in the future. He really has some great pots and glazes to choose from.

I won't be reporting until summer but I will post a mock up picture I took tonight. I wanted something a little brighter and tropical and that's why I went with this pot.

As far as the stand goes, I'm working on a smaller stand now with some extra wood i had now to try and practice before I make a stand for this display. If you have seen Al's blog you will see how much of a craftsman he is, and I am not so it will be interesting to see how it turns out.

Well here is about how it will look once I get it repotted. I am having a bit of trouble figuring out what to do with the back branch separation, thanks Poink ha

Have you wired this tree ???
Reason why I ask, is that alot of the probs.
some are having with the tree, can easily be
resolved with some wire. And if it is still
without foilage, it would be an awesome time
to do so...
:)

Not quite sure what it would be doing without
foilage this time of year though... but that is
a totally new thread discussion...

No I haven't wired it yet, was planning on working on it this summer. It should have leaves but I defoliated it because it looked healthy and I wanted to try and get some back budding. It's been growing under lights and is just about leafing back out now, with a few new buds here and there.

Good choice Tom.

I think the pot works very well with your tree.

It will look even better when the tree has leafed out.

I'm sure your display will turn out great. Please share a few photos of the final composition.

I appreciate your kind words and your support.

Cheers,
Paul

Thanks Paul, ill certainly update this post with the repot and final presentation. The tree needs a few more years but hopefully it will look good this fall. Thanks again for your work on this pot and transaction.

I have never done a total defoliation but if I ever do it...I will pinch most (if not all) the terminal buds to force more back budding. Terminal buds are usually given priority, by eliminating them, the plant is forced to re-distribute (theoretically at least).

If you look at Rob Kempinski's threads at IBC you will see that he completely defoliates his ficus. His are well ramified and something to strive for. Granted, he does live in Florida where he probably defoliates his trees twice or more a year.

Oh, I don't question the benefit of defoliation...I am just qualifying that I haven't done it yet. :) You bet I will when my trees are ready.

Not theoretically...hormonally. Auxin is a hormone that accumulates at the branch tip; it's presence retards growth of side shoots behind it. When the tips are removed, the auxins are removed as well, which allows the tree to direct energy to the previously-retarded side shoots.
