they have a stout Coastal Redwood there too.....
Lovely. I DO like the chunky sumo coastals... Mirai has a couple on their site - but when I was in Humboldt county I have to say I didn’t see any of these. They’re much more formal and stout in the forest. But I suppose the allure of coastals in part is their re-growth - I did see a lot of mother tree / stumps that had new trees growing out of them. Maybe that’s the inspiration of the chunkers. And even this one, could be styled into a couple clump trunks that finish tall.

Spring update and 1st video for 2021. Also included is a time lapse of my bonsai 2-step, which has gotten out of hand.
Happy to report that all trees are now in their final (until I start tinkering, probably tomorrow) spots for the season. Death to the 2-step!

Mine are going out tomorrow!!! A week in the shade until they reach their final destination for the summer.

Great new video. That beech has everything you want in a beech, smooth unblemished bark, and some back buds.

Bummer about the hornbeam. It was probably the bleeding that hindered the main trunk from budding out. I've had the exact same problem. Sealing immediately seemed to help on later attempts.

Thanks Leo! Yes - the gray thick cut paste was applied about 3 hours after collecting… so I must be quicker. Or, I’ve used super glue with some success.

I am excited about the beech! I think the nebari, with some select root grafts, could be excellent. I think broom of sorts might be best.

Dat Amur maple👁👅👁 , I’ll have to watch that and the larch
The Amur has been through a rough couple of years… it is recovering well this year and much root grafting in its future. Currently have an approach graft to have a suitable apex.

Approach graft where that new apex? Nice, I got one in development, but still on the hunt for one that’s a chunky stump. Got a few avenues.

They seem to be fast growers. Got a bunch of cuttings for a forest and about 100 from seed. If they chunk up quick I can sent you one (in ten years) :)

New vid - Bit of styling for my thuja occidentalis. Happy with the first time raffia operation, but this tree has some necessary grafting in its future in order to become a bonsai.

I like it…a lot. Okay….to me it looks like a totally wicked dance from the beginning Guardians of the Galaxy II. Besides that in my mind…excellent tree and it’s in the right hands to make the most of it.

Thanks for watching - it is a bizarre and wicked looking tree - hoping I can retain that feeling.
And that last part is debatable, but I’m going slow so hopefully these hands get more skilled as I go!

Queued up to watch later! Are you going to give us a fall tour of your trees this year? I would love to see how things are progressing!

Awesome, appreciate it! Yes, I’m planning to do a fall run-through here in the next couple weeks, and shoot for having it edited prior to leaving on my honeymoon mid-November. For us fall colors are just starting to pop (wayyy late) due to our warm autumn temps thus far.

Same here, we're weeks behind. I still have tropicals outside!
