Go big or go home!

This one is growing on me. I go back and forth over whether I should attempt to get that big scar on the base to heal over or carve it out into a uro feature. I applied wood hardener to the exposed wood this spring but it's becoming punky again, so I'll have to remove it and fill it with epoxy if I want it to heal over. I grew a lot of callus so it could still be done within a 5 year period I think... We'll all know by spring where it's going. I do know it's going to get some thread grafts and some root grafts.

Thread grafts and a new planting angle accompanied the re-pot on this one. The three approach root grafts from last year failed… But I think that’s OK as I realized last fall that this one seems to have corky arakawa bark. For what it’s worth, I think I can work with the existing rootage with the new planting angle. Also, I’m still sitting on the fence as to whether I will carve out that scar smack dab in the middle of the lower trunk… Stay tuned :-)

I started a thread graft at the very base of this tree probably three years ago… You can see it in the lower left part of the picture above. Is this what you’re referring to?

There is a thread graft, started this past winter, through a root on the left side of the base of the tree pictured a few posts ago.

First re-pot of the season is done! The difficulty with this material is the chosen front and the fact that the rootage, though essentially 360 degrees around the trunk, is on somewhat different levels, and made up of several older roots and many smaller ones. I like the uneven, wild feel to roots as they are, but can't plant the tree at the proper angle until the roots on the left and rear have grown enough. At each re-pot, I move the angle ever so slightly toward the end goal, and the roots on the front and right will continue to be buried until we get there. Maybe, at that point, this tree might see some akadama :cool: .
