I went on wigerts bonsai and saw they have dwarf african strangler fig for sale . Is it an easy plant to grow I have a sunny east window I can put it by at my day program and I can put it outdoors until late September in full sun

Any thoughts what I could do with it bonsai wise growing on a dead tree or rotting wood

Is September Spring or Fall? It helps if you tell us where in the world you are, Carmen San Diego.

Wigert’s website says indoor/outdoor.

It is Ficus natalensis.

In his book The World of Ficus Bonsai, Mr. North American-Indoor-Tropical-Expert, Jerry Meislik, says, “One of my favorite trees for use as an indoor bonsai as it is a strong grower and tolerant of a wide variety of growing conditions.”

Me speaking, don’t put it full sun outdoors after being indoors, acclimate it by putting it in shade for a week and then partial sun for week or two.

Next year when indoor growing you may find a small LED grow light beneficial depending on how much light it gets indoors.

Happy Birthday!

Here is your average monthly temps according to Google. I’d agree you should bring it in when the temps drop below 50F. I also don’t prune or repot until the nights are above 60F and they are actively growing.

Growing it over dead wood could look cool if it has some movement or interest. Growing on rotting wood would be like a nurse log and you can find inspirations pics online of others compositions.

Cheers

wow, wigert's has some nice imports and other new things, it's been a while since I visited the site

i like wigerts but its tempting to go on their i need to stop buying so many plants lol.
Especially tropicals for someone in Minnesota! But I’m not much better now that I’m in KS! The only thing hold me back now is that I have zero grow tent room. But I’d really like a nice Natal Fig and some Premna!

They have lots more than what's on their website. If you're looking for something in particular, email them. They are happy to send pictures as well.

its looking really good stretching out its leaves and adjusting to the outside.

I'll probably start acclimating it to the inside in mid September.

I have very bright east windows i can put it by.

doing really well i am going on vecation for a few days starting the 15th and ending the 22/d of august.

Ficus update

It's at my house and by a window with a light on it

Hi @dancing with butterflies , I just saw this thread in the "new posts" section.

First off, Happy Belated Birthday!

Second, nice tree! `I agree to let the tree acclimate and 'rest' until spring. I have killed too many trees by working on them at inopportune times!
